What does Macropass data show about how people log meals?

This page will publish original, aggregated Macropass data: how people describe meals, how often an estimate is corrected after it is logged, and how wide the calorie band is for typed, spoken and photographed meals. The first report is planned for the third month after launch. Until then the page states the methodology so readers know what the numbers will and will not mean.

What will the Macropass data report contain?

Three measures, each aggregated across all users and never per person: the share of meals logged by text, voice, photo, repeat and connected assistant; the share of estimates corrected in one sentence before confirming, and which assumption lines are corrected most; and the median calorie band by input, which shows how much more an estimate has to assume for a photo than for a described meal with quantities.

How is the data collected and anonymised?

Macropass records, for each estimate, the input mode, whether a correction was applied, and the calorie band width. The report uses only these aggregated counts. It contains no meal descriptions, photos, transcripts, weights, names or account identifiers, and no measure is reported for groups smaller than one hundred meals. Percentages are rounded to whole numbers.

What will the data not show?

It will not show whether Macropass is accurate against a scale, because Macropass has no ground truth for what was on the plate; it will not show health or weight outcomes, because Macropass makes no medical or weight-loss claims; and it will not compare users, because the data is aggregated. It is a description of how describe-to-log behaves, not evidence about any person or any outcome.

Can I reuse the data?

Yes. Each report will ship with a CSV under a permissive licence and a fixed URL, and the methodology paragraph above is the citation. Quote the report date with any number, because later reports will replace earlier ones as the sample grows.

Data questions

When is the first Macropass data report?

In the third month after launch, once the sample is large enough for the one-hundred-meal minimum per group. This page will be updated with the date.

Does the report include my meals?

Only as counts. No description, photo, transcript, weight or identifier leaves the aggregate.

Will the report say how accurate Macropass is?

No. Macropass has no ground truth for what was eaten. Every estimate is an estimate with stated assumptions and a calorie band, and the report describes how those bands and corrections behave.

Just tell it what you ate.

Describe a meal, check the Macropass estimate, correct if needed. Your day updates the moment it lands.
